Naujaat - ᓇᐅᔮᑦ

Naujaat is at the north end of Roes Welcome Sound, which separates Southampton Island from the mainland. The community continues to rely on traditional sealing, fishing, hunting, trapping, and carving for their livelihood, together with tourism. The area is well known for its nesting grounds, located about five kilometers north of the community as every June, thousands of seagulls, snowbirds, loons, eider ducks, longtail ducks, and jaegers return to nest.

The CRN research team visited the community in February 2020. Team members held participatory mapping workshops with the Hunters and Trappers Association, Hamlet staff, Elders, and other resource users, collecting observations on coastal health and changing coastal conditions. Participants provided all data illustrated on this map.

At the time we visited the community, no urgent community restoration priorities were identified. However, based on other studies, coastal restoration priorities include freshwater table monitoring, economic feasibility studies, and shipping and transportation research.
