Whale Cove - ᑎᑭᕋᔪᐊᖅ

Whale Cove Hamlet is located on the western coast of Hudson Bay. The area is known for its abundance of beluga whales that congregate in nearby waters every fall. Integrated with wage-based activities, the community also support themselves either fully or in part by hunting, fishing, and trapping. Important cultural and food species are seals, walrus, and beluga whales. The community’s hunting and fishing area spans approximately 200 km north to south and 300 km east to west, and includes Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet, Tavani, Bibby Island, and Arviat.

The research team visited the community in March 2018. Team members held participatory mapping workshops with the Hunters and Trappers Association, Hamlet staff, Elders, and other resource users, collecting observations on coastal health and changing coastal conditions. Participants provided all data illustrated on this map.

At the time we visited the community, no urgent community restoration priorities were identified. However, based on other studies, coastal restoration priorities include the need for community-based monitoring, especially on the health of animals consumed by the residents, fostering of traditional knowledge transfer through community engagement, and Inuit studies on land use, wildlife, fishing, and hunting. Community members would also like to see the knowledge shared and used in management decisions.
